RULES
GENERAL INFORMATION
1a. The competition is open to musicians of any nationality, of both sexes and without any age limit;
1b. The competition is structured in three phases: PRELIMINARY STAGE, ELIMINATORY STAGE and FINAL STAGE;
1c. The PRELIMINARY STAGE consists in the examination of a video, all the other phases of the competition will be live in front of the jury;
1d. The PRELIMINARY STAGE takes place from October 1st 2024 until May 31st 2025, the candidates will choose their preferred location for the PRELIMINARY PHASE at the moment of the application;
1e. The ELIMINATORY STAGE takes place in Italy (Florence) and U.S.A. (Richmond) in July 2025, according to the following calendar:
– FLORENCE
Dates: July Saturday 26th, Sunday 27th, Monday 28th, Tuesday 29th
Location: Teatro Niccolini
via Ricasoli 3, Florence, Italy
– RICHMOND
Dates: July Friday 25th, Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th
Location: Richmond Symphony Orchestra

1f. The FINAL STAGE will take place from October the 14th until October the 19th 2025 in Budapest, Hungary;
1g. In order to register, the candidates have to fill the on-line application form on the website and send all the required documents;
1h. The application fee to the Preliminary Phase is €64,00; the application fee to the Eliminatory Phase is €342,00;
1i. The participation to the Final Phase is free for the candidates admitted;
PRELIMINARY PHASE
2a. The candidates are requested to send one (1) video that should show the candidate’s skills to the members of the jury;
2.b There is no limit in the length of the video (the jury is not obliged to watch the entire video, each member of the jury will watch the time he/she considers necessary to evaluate the candidate);
2.c Any kind of ensemble is accepted;
2.d Videos of a performance or a rehearsal are accepted;
2.e The videos must be played in streaming mode without any restriction (videos that have to be downloaded will not be accepted);
2.f The videos can be private or public as long as they can be seen by the entire jury without any restrictions (no need for the jury to register to any platform, no advertising before the beginning of the video);
ELIMINATORY PHASE
3a. The candidates admitted to the ELIMINATORY STAGE will be informed within May the 31st 2025 and will be invited to conduct one of the following pieces:
– L. van Beethoven, Symphony n.1 in C major op. 21, First Movement “Allegro con brio”
– Béla Bartók, Concerto for Orchestra: Intermezzo Interrotto
3b. The candidates selected to take part to the FINAL STAGE will be informed within August the 1ts 2025 and their names will also be published on the website and on the social media of the competition;
FINAL PHASE
3a. The FINAL STAGE will take place in Budapest from October the 15th until October the 19th 2025 and consists on a FIRST ROUND, a SECOND ROUND, a SEMIFINAL and a FINAL;

Candidates admitted:
A maximum number of Thirty-Six (36) conductors will be admitted to the First Round. Each candidate will have to conduct two (2) pieces chosen by the jury. The conductors will be informed about the pieces that they will have to conduct one (1) day before their turn;
Podium time:
Each candidate will have about 16 minutes of podium time;

Johannes Brahms, 3rd Symphony in F Major Op. 90, 1st mov. “Allegro con brio”;

Candidates admitted:
Twelve (12) conductors will be admitted to the Second Round. Each candidate will have to conduct one (1) piece chosen by the jury. The conductors will be informed about the piece that they will have to conduct the evening before their turn;
Podium time:
Each candidate will have about 20 minutes of podium time;

Six (6) conductors will be admitted to the Semifinal. Each candidate will have to conduct excerpts from Bartóks Concerto for Orchestra and Mussorgsky/Ravels Pictures at an exhibition plus Per Luciano Berio or D’un Matin de Printemps;
The conductors will be informed about the piece that they will have to conduct the evening before their turn;
Podium time:
Each candidate will have about 40 minutes of podium time;

Finalist 2

Two (2) conductors will be admitted to the Semifinal. Each finalist will have a rehearsal of approximately 80 minutes and will conduct the assigned pieces in the final concert;
The pieces assigned to each conductor will be drawn the evening before the final;
The jury will not interfere with the rehearsal;
The final concert is part of the competition;
The winner of the competition will be announced at the end of the concert, in front of the audience;
Podium time:
Each candidate will have about 80 minutes of podium time for the rehearsal plus the final concert;

7a. All the candidates admitted to the FINAL STAGE will receive a diploma attesting that they have reached this stage of the competition;
7b. All the candidates that reached the SEMIFINAL will receive the official plate of Semifinalists of the Fourth Antal Dorati Competition;
ASSISTANCE TO THE PARTICIPANTS
8a. The organization will offer assistance for the organization of the travel and accommodation to the Candidates Admitted to the Final Stage of the competition;
TRANSPARENCY AND EVALUTATION PROCEDURES
9a. Candidates who have any kind of relations with a member of the jury (students, former students, relatives, employes) must declare his/her state at the moment of the application;
9b. About the voting process, each member of the jury will give a point from 1 to 5 (where 5 is the highest mark), then a simple average will be made between the given votes;
9c. Members of the jury who have any kind of relation with a participant will not vote for him/her and the votes will be calculated accordingly;
9d. The total number of candidates admitted to the live phase of the competition is 36 and will be chosen from the participants in the elimination phases of Richmond and Florence in proportion to the total number of participants;
9e. The results of each stage of the competition will be published on the website and will remain visible for the whole period of the competition;
